“The 117th entry in our DJBooth.net Freestyle Series comes courtesy of Kam Moye, the Charlotte native who earned reader approval for single Let’s Be Honest. On his brand new, previously-unreleased Once Again freestyle, the MYX Music signee flows over a Marco Polo-produced beat originally featured on KRS-One & Buckshot‘s Oh Really.”
The rules for DJBooth.net freestyles are simple: 1) Mention DJ Booth at least twice and 2) Kill it! Shout out to DJ Z for the opportunity and Marco Polo for the instrumental.
Recently, ESPN used my song ‘Step By Step’ (produced by D.R.) during a promo video for the Mulisha freestyle motorcross team. If you’ve never witnessed them, Mulisha does some INSANE tricks on motorcycles. This is definitely some good exposure. Shout out to the MYX Music fam for making it happen!
Nowadays, the line between artists and fans are completely blurred. Fans and listeners now have a platform to voice their complaints and make as many demands directly to the artists. Sometimes it’s a great idea but it also leaves room for some serious WTF moments. Imagine if you could’ve emailed Rakim back in the day and told him personally that ‘Chinese Arithmetic’ was the worst song on Paid In Full? Just imagine the emails that Big Daddy Kane would’ve received when ‘Prince of Darkness’ dropped. With that in mind, I decided to make a list of the 10 Things to Never Say to an Indie Artist. These are responses that your favorite indie artists wants to tell you but probably doesn’t. This list was written from a sarcastic, humorous standpoint so PLEASE don’t take offense. I know how sensitive and defensive people get about these type of things. There’s just as much truth as there is humor in this list though.
1. How are the album sales so far? We’re INDIE! If the sales were worth raving about then we’d be sitting in Jimmy Iovine’s office right now. Asking an indie artist how his/her album is selling is like asking someone with bad credit how much they are paying for their monthly car note. No matter how you answer it, it still sounds horrible to the average person. (more…)
Last night, I had a chance to sit down and have an in-depth discussion with longtime supporter DJ Deluge and Tim Stroh from Chicago’s WNUR 89.3 FM. The outspoken interview speaks on the growth from Supa to Kam, the current working status with M-phazes/!llmind, the stereotype of Southern artists, lack of balance of music on the radio, the stigma that comes with hip hop, and much more. This is a lengthy interview but it’s definitely worth the listen. Shout out to DJ Deluge and Tim Stroh for the opportunity and giving me a platform to express my opinions and allow my music to be heard.
I used to always listen to DJ Scene’s mixshow on satellite radio a few years back. It’s rare to see a DJ who plays mainstream music but still manages to break a few indie records without losing momentum. AND he can really scratch! Remember those days? He is currently handling the duties for this edition of the industry-praised Cornerstone mixtape series. My track “Life Line” with One Be Lo is featured on this free mix/podcast. Give it a listen! It’s officially here… the music video for the first single, Let’s Be Honest. The song was produced by Veterano. The video was directed by Matt Koza and shot on location in Philadelphia (Malcolm X Park). I wanted to post it earlier but I was on the road doing shows so I couldn’t post it on Friday as planned. Thanks to Matt Koza and the entire crew who helped out with everything and made it a great experience. Also, Shout out to Tashea Lowery who played wifey in the video. NO…that’s not my real wife but YES that is the diamond ring that I bought her…lol. Thanks to Audible Treats and Onsmash.com for spreading the word. Enjoy!
